The Porsche 356 was produced between 1948 and 1955 before being replaced by the 356A.
In 1953 ‘The Autocar’ described the 356 as a car whose "fine aerodynamic lines attract immediate attention" and whose "very appearance suggests speed”.
By 1953, the new, larger capacity motors carried very few of the original Volkswagen based components, resulting in cars capable of more than 100mph.
For 1955 the American importer of Porsche products, Max Hoffman, convinced the company that Americans only bought cars with identifying names. As a result, and for 1955 only, American cars were all badged Continental and available as a Coupe, Cabriolet or Speedster. The name was short lived as Ford were about to bring out the new model Lincoln Continental MKIl.
The stylish coachwork is by Reutter of Stuttgart and carries the distinctive bent windshield of the 1954/55 models. Extra features in this vehicle include the bench seat, radio and Abarth exhaust system with the right hand drive conversion having been completed by the owners.
