In 1980 Porsche wanted to enter the Group 4 Sports Car Class for Le Mans in 1980. They based their car on the successful 924 mainstream model and all non-essential elements were removed in an effort to reduce weight. The vehicle was subsequently entered into the gruelling 24 Hours of Le Mans but in order to comply with homologation regulations a minimum number of road going versions had to be produced.

Porsche addressed this requirement by creating the 924 Carrera GT. Standard specification included a close ratio dog-leg 5 speed gearbox, LSD, Bilstein shock absorbers, polyurethane front and rear flared guards, polyurethane front spoiler, bonnet mounted air scoop and intercooler, thinner glass, larger brakes, front brake cooling ducts, external engine oil cooler and lowered suspension.

The 2-litre turbo-charged engine produced 210 bhp, with a top speed of 242 kph and 0-100 kph in 6.5 seconds. Impressive performance from a road going 4-cylinder car in 1981.

Porsche also subsequently produced a limited number of GTS models with 245 bhp, and a handful of GTR and GTP race versions with 375 bhp and 420 bhp.

This car is one of 75 RHD examples built, 20 of which were black. It is a highly original example of one of the rarest Porsche that has been sympathetically maintained rather than restored. It even includes the glass fibre front brake ducts which are often are missing from minor accidents over the years.
