I've just become the fourth custodian of a truly unique Porsche, a 2004 996 Twin Turbo 650 EVO Gemballa, the only example in Australia. Originally delivered by Porsche Queensland to Brewer Motorsport (then Gemballa's Australian agent), it was optioned with every Porsche and Gemballa upgrade to serve as the official exhibition car. Built in Germany with the full GTR 650 Evo engine and gearbox (660hp, 0-100 in 3.2s, 360kph top speed), it wears the wide body with carbon bonnet and guards, GT2 Evo aero, Brembo 380/365mm brakes, and adjustable coilovers, all matched to a bespoke carbon/leather interior. Its colourful history includes Shane Brewer, notorious loan shark Tim Ward, and a long-term private owner before me. Once tested by MOTOR Magazine as the fastest car they'd ever driven, it remains an A$550,000 carbon-bodied time capsule of Gemballa's wildest era.
The car's aura is made even more intense by the fate of Uwe Gemballa himself, who vanished in 2010 and was later found murdered in South Africa, tied to murky dealings with organised crime and money laundering.
