The Porsche 930 three litre turbo cars were manufactured between 1975 and 1977 before switching to the 3.3 litre engines.

Only 91 out of 2819 3.0 litre Porsches built in those years were made in right hand drive, with just 41 of those 91 right hand drive cars making it to Australia. In such few numbers this makes them rarer than the coveted 2.7RS in right hand drive.

This Australian delivered Porsche 930  was delivered in 1977 being built in Stuttgart in July of 1976. This Porsche was driven through the streets of South Australia and Victoria before being parked and then not driven for nearly 20 years until the current owners purchased it.

The interior which is the highlight of the now restored car had been painted over in black, the exterior metallic silver paint was thick from multiple resprays, the anodised trims were painted over and peeling, while the engine was missing at least 100 of its 256bhp.

The car has since undergone an extensive restoration. The windows out, bare metal respray revealed a body that had essentially survived unscathed from the years of driving.
From the rebuilt suspension and  brakes, to the new flywheel and gearbox restoration, to even sourcing the center console and original blaupunkt bamberg radio with pull out microphone for dictation, this  car presents today in a condition that would’ve have matched the day it was delivered back in 1977.

The interior was special from factory. According to Porsche Australia, blue leather (same as the martini cars of the day), with Mackenzie beige tartan inserts matched to plush sliver knit yellow carpets. The owners were able to verify the blue where the leather trim was folded and stapled to the back side. That leather sample was original and not faded being out of the sun. The leather was sourced and scythed to the correct thickness, colour match tanned (not dyed) and the correct nap pressed into it- Even the  tartan inserts were stitched in per factory specifications as to where the folds were to sit. This Porsche features too the hex pattern white roof lining common to the early Porsches.

This 930 3.0 today drives as it did back in 1977 but sits on campagnolo replica gold wheels, while the period correct restored Fuchs await fitment.

A true poster child of every 70’s child’s dream car and super car of its day -The whale tailed porsche 930 turbo, ancestor to todays mighty 992 turbo S …. this folks is where it all began.
